Salvation: Through its seven sacraments, and acting in the person of Christ, the Roman Catholic Church transmits God’s favor for salvation. Grace is infused into their recipients, transforming their character so they may work to merit eternal life.
Sacraments are believed to been started by Christ, to communicate the grace or power of God through the use of material objects. Catholic churches accept seven sacraments: Baptism, Confirmation, the Eucharist, Reconciliation or confession, Anointing of the Sick, Marriage, and Holy Orders.
There is no single leader in the church. No pope. The Patriarch of Constantinople has the honor of primacy, but does not carry the same authority as the Pope does in Catholicism. The religious authority for Orthodox Christianity is not the Pope but the scriptures as interpreted by the seven ecumenical councils of the church.
Eastern Orthodoxy teaches the opposite order. Orthodoxy teaches that a person must first do good works in order to receive a mere possibility that God might save him. The seven “Sacred Mysteries,” or sacraments, are one primary component of “good works” in Eastern Orthodoxy.
The Catholic Church has seven sacraments: Baptism, Confirmation, the Eucharist, Penance, Anointing of the Sick, Holy Orders, and Matrimony. While embracing these seven “major mysteries,” Orthodox churches do not have a definite number of sacraments and include other events of blessing, service, prayer, song, procession, and more that render tangible the presence of God.
First of all we must say that traditionally the Orthodox never counted the sacraments. The number of seven was adopted in Orthodoxy very recently under the influence of the Roman Catholic Church. Traditionally the Orthodox understand everything in the Church to be sacramental.
